A: Let’s be real: ever since Facebook started allowing old people in, it’s gotten a lot more complicated. Now moms, dads, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and even professors want a piece of the social networking pie!
Luckily for you, Anon, the growing number of adults on Facebook doesn’t have to put an end to your privacy. With the Limited Profile feature, you can keep the most private details of your Facebook life hidden from your elders. Here’s what you need to do:
- In your privacy settings, create a new friend list and give it a name. Let’s call it ‘old people.’
- Tinker with that list’s settings to prevent the people on it from seeing whatever it is you don’t want them to be privy to. Tagged photos, photo albums, and status updates are usually a good place to start.
- Add all of the privacy-compromising adults you’re friends with to the ‘old people’ list and do the same for any new requests you receive from oldies.
And voilà, your privacy is maintained without hurting your professor’s feelings! Since she’s a new FB friend, she won’t know the difference between your real profile and the limited version she’ll be seeing. Trust me, she’ll be ecstatic that you even accepted her friend request. She’ll be excited to see your kewl (is that what the kids are calling it these days?) profile picture and think she’s, like, totally good at using Facebook now, especially since she didn’t even have to ask her daughter for help. Because she’s a cool mom.
Love,
Lauren
